Handloomed Sozni Embroidered Chakra Shawl 'Sudarshan'

This rare, hand-embroidered white cashmere pashmina is woven from naturally undyed Grade A Ladakhi fibre and finished in an intricate Sozni Jamawar design. A traditional Chakra motif — a circular symbol representing motion, protection, hope and knowledge — winds across the surface in interconnected vines, outlined in fine black thread and delicately filled with pink and white embroidery.

The cashmere was sourced in 2020 from Mrs Decchan Dolma of Rango Village, then, due to pandemic restrictions, it was transported to Kullu rather than Kashmir for de-hairing, carding and scouring. Hand-spun yarn forms the warp from Kullu and the weft from Kashmir, producing a one-of-a-kind textile that unites two distinct artisanal regions. This process produces an incredibly fine and unbroken yarn, ranging in thickness from 110-140 English count, and could not be replicated on a machine without a 'carrier fibre'.

Following the COVID-19 pandemic, the handloom industry had lost almost 50% of its weaving capacity. It was only through family-run businesses that fabric continued to be produced in any quantity during this period. Mr Abid Khan wove the fabric on one of his two pit looms, which was then skilfully embroidered by Mr Hamid Ahmed and finished by Mr Zakir Wani in Srinagar in January 2023.

At each step this shawl has been thoughtfully crafted with patience and care, imbuing each piece with a rich cultural and symbolic significance.

Supplied with a copy of The Kashmir Shawl book, each piece is a unique link to the landscapes and lives behind its origin and creation.

Product Care

Professional dry cleaning is recommended to maintain the fine embroidery and soft texture of the hand-spun cashmere. For light refreshes at home, store the shawl folded in tissue in a breathable container away from sunlight or moth exposure. We suggest using our Woolskin Premium Woolwash for gentle care when appropriate. For full advice, visit our Product Care Guide.

Origin & Sustainability

This piece supports a lineage of slow-made, heritage craft that bridges regions and communities. Spinning, weaving, embroidery and finishing were all completed by individual artisans using traditional, low-impact techniques — from hand pit-loom weaving to fine needlework.

Woven during the height of the pandemic, this shawl stands as a record of resilience in the Kashmiri textile tradition. The collaboration between Kullu and Kashmir not only preserved ancestral knowledge but helped sustain family-run workshops through a time of uncertainty.
