This beautiful cashmere pashmina is hand-woven in stunning aqua blue and bold red. Light as a feather and beautifully soft, it is fully reversible and finished with a natural fringe.
\nThis pashmina is part of a range developed as a revival of classic shawls. Each shawl is woven entirely by hand using a traditional Ikat pattern, which is primarily found in the state of Odesa. In this technique, the weft yarn is unwrapped and tie-dyed, then carefully rewound on a hand charka before being woven into the fabric. This merging of yarn and colour is known as Sangam, meaning ‘union’. Ikat’s distinctive resist-dyeing process — similar to tie-dye — requires tightly binding sections of yarn to preserve their natural tone. This may be repeated multiple times to achieve intricate, multicolour designs.
\nInspired by reflections of a sunset on a lake, the style for this exquisite piece was first developed in 2016 while working on the design for a collection called ‘Shades of Mountain’.
The cashmere used in this shawl is combed from the chest and underbelly of Changthangi goats in Leh, Ladakh, a region famed for its premium cashmere. In this cold desert region of the Himalayas, temperatures can reach minus 35°C during winter. The cashmere is therefore extremely fine, varying between 9-16 microns, and is prized for its incredible insulating properties, lightness and warmth.
